Many mature students have pre existing financial burdens when attending University, such as child maintenance payments and child care, paying into pension plans, mortgages, hire purchase agreements and the like.
This can substantially increase the monthly costs that we have to weigh up and budget for, so my suggestion would be that the University gives Mature Students some form of Bursary to help ease our path a little.
In my case, I did not receive the Bursary for the first year (£1,000) because I did my Foundation Course with the Open University 30 odd years ago which seemed a little unfair, had I done it at a college of FE I would have received it and if I was doing a foundation year at Hull I would have received it also. This seems iniquitous and somewhat arbitrary.
The University of Hull has a high percentage of Mature Students spread across a large age range and is proud of this diversity. As we all are aware, often such matters are a barrier to accessing Higher Education.
