Now that we are in a new phase of university education where the students are directly charged fees for access to learning, there needs to be more transparency in what those fees are paying for. There is nothing wrong with the university making a profit but value for money can only be achieved if the students are given a breakdown of what they are paying for.
If the tuition fees a student pays amounts to £9000 per year, how much does the use of the buildings cost that student? How much is the learning material worth? And how much of the £9000 goes towards paying for lecturers?
In every other field where you are paying for access and renting the space, you are provided with a statement that itemises what you are paying for. The university should be no different.
