    Union Council News 18/12/2014

    Union Council met for the third time this year on Monday 15th December 2014.

    Four motions were discussed:

    • 1. First, a Motion of Caution was brought against VP Activities (Tory Cliffe). The Chair Societies Executive Committee (Kathleen Brook) proposed the motion with Chair Raising and Giving (Simon Bagg) in support. Amber Jenkins also spoke in support of the motion. VP Activities (Tory Cliffe) spoke against the motion and Chair LINKS (Angela Suriyakumaran) spoke in abstention.

       

      Votes: 29

      21% voted FOR the motion

      38% voted AGAINST the motion

      41% voted to ABSTAIN

      Result: the motion fell

       

    • 2. Second, a motion was brought regarding the Condition of the AstroTurf. Chloe Douthett proposed the motion.

       

      Votes: 24

      83% voted FOR the motion

      4% voted AGAINST the motion

      13% voted to ABSTAIN

      Result: the motion passed

       

    • 3. Third, a motion was brought regarding the Timeliness of Union Council Papers. The Faculty Co-ordinator Science and Engineering (Matt Evans) proposed the motion.

       

      Vote: 24

      92% voted FOR the motion

      4% voted AGAINST the motion,

      4% voted to ABSTAIN.

      Result: the motion passed.

       

    • 4.Finally, changes to the Bye-Laws and Standing Orders Governing Elections were brought. The President proposed the changes. Union Council first voted on the changes to the Standing Orders Governing Elections.

       

      Votes: 24

      96% voted FOR the changes

      4% voted AGAINST the changes

      0% voted to ABSTAIN

      Result: the changes passed.

       

    • 5. Union Council then voted on the changes to the Bye-Laws.

       

      Votes: 25

      84% voted FOR the changes

      16% votes AGAINST the changes

      0% voted to ABSTAIN

      Result: the changes passed.

       

    Union Council heard updates on the following motions: Scarborough Social Space, Financial Help for Part-Time Students, Wednesday Lectures Should End At 12:05, UCU Marking Boycott.

    Union Council ratified the following societies:

    Amnesty International Society, Wilderness Medicine Society, Game of Thrones Society, Humba Rumba Society.

     

    Union Council discussed HUU’s policy on legal highs.

    In groups, attendees discussed the following questions:

    • How could we support staff and students on legal highs?

    • Do we need to hold a campaign raising awareness of legal highs and how?

    • What info/advice on legal highs do we need to supply and how?

    • What disciplinary action should there be?

     

    Union Council will next meet on Monday 23rd February 2015 in Scarborough.
